Nan’s Ginger Nut Bickies
Out of all of the recipes I have from my Nan’s old recipe books - oooh, wait, let’s back track a little. When I say ‘recipe books,’ I’m using the term loosely. They were books, once upon a time. The kind with a back cover, and a front, and binding down the centre, where the pages remain fixed. But these days both are a lot worse for wear. Neither one of them has a front cover. One actually does have a back cover. A delicious green, much like all of the delicious greens I have found amongst my Nan’s cooking treasures. The binding on that one remains but it’s in a fragile state and needs handling with care if I want it to remain somewhat held together.
That one has the most gorgeous pages. Yellowing, as you would expect from paper printed back in the 1950s, but blank with only a simple date and the month and year at the top. The perfect diary in my mind’s eye, but I see why my Nan also chose it as a recipe book. A beautiful blank slate full of spaces to fill with handwritten recipes and glued in cuttings.
